Artists Building Communities
We started as a ragtag group of recently out-of-work artists from the Vulcan Lofts who came together to build emergency homes at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have now grown to a group of over 200 volunteers and 10 organizers. Housed and unhoused, our team has now built 15 tiny homes in encampments in Oakland as well as partnered with other organizations to provide other amenities, and resources to these communities.
The Future
With the eviction moratorium ended, we are supporting residents but no longer building emergency tiny homes. Two of the three founding members of ABC are now partnering with a conscious tech coalition to create a formal, and sustainable transitional tiny home village. This will be called Tree Ring Village and will be built in Oakland. Our goal is to have it opporational by Summer 2024.
